& Expertise
Mass Insight provides
unique policy and communications services, working with both public
and private sector executives. We frame critical issues, translate
complex information into plain English, bring in perspectives from
the right experts, and get people to pay attention.
We serve a select group of clients, representing leading Massachusetts
companies, professional firms, associations, nonprofits, and public
sector agencies, through a range of initiatives designed to probe
key competitiveness issues, analyze possible responses, and take
informed action.
Mass Insight has built a reputation as a source for the best public
opinion issue and field research in Massachusetts – and as
a catalyst for action. We and our clients work with a wide range
of contacts to shape debate, make recommendations, and create programs
that lead to change.
Mass Insight initiatives spring from priorities raised by our
corporate clients and public sector leaders, and from our own analysis
of the Massachusetts competitive environment.
Mass Insight Model
The Mass Insight model is driven by three imperatives:
I. Information Collection
We use an extensive network of contacts and consultants (in addition
to our own clients) to assess an issue, identify options, and develop
an approach. We create custom data on a shared, cost-effective
basis, and perform a comprehensive scan of the field for other
pertinent information. Mass Insight produces the only Massachusetts
statewide public opinion surveys that track thirteen years of
data.
II. Narrowing, Synthesis, and Discussion
Mass Insight calls upon its contacts, clients, and consultants to
provide informed perspectives and recommendations on a particular
issue in interactive, small-group meetings.
III. Converting to Action
Mass Insight communicates findings to selected or general audiences,
and follows up on its recommendations through public-private
partnerships designed to improve government performance and enhance
the Commonwealth's
competitive environment.
Areas of Expertise
Polling: Mass Insight produces the only Massachusetts
statewide public opinion surveys that track thirteen years of data.
This is the Commonwealth’s only business-backed poll. The
surveys are based on 500 telephone interviews each quarter and are
conducted by Opinion Dynamics Corporation of Cambridge, a national
leader in market research and consulting. These polls are used and
published selectively to support Mass Insight’s ongoing initiatives
and goals.
Infrastructure: Massachusetts' physical infrastructure,
especially transportation and water resources, is critical to our
economic health. Any economic development strategy for the state
and its regions requires coordinated transportation and water plans
for the next decade, with clear immediate priorities and funding
from all levels of government, including user fees. Mass Insight
Leadership Briefings focus on the core foundations of infrastructure
and our annual Infrastructure Conference in December addresses issues
including a planning process to prioritize, fund and coordinate
infrastructure projects that support business expansion, create
new jobs and improve quality of life in Massachusetts. The one-day
conference is attended by several hundred professionals in the infrastructure,
corporate and public sectors, and is widely regarded for its influence
in shaping the state’s infrastructure priorities.
Mass Insight also manages the Massachusetts Clean Water Council,
a unique partnership of major public agencies, local communities
and private sector professionals working to reclaim the state's
harbors and waterways and provide Massachusetts residents with
drinking water that continues to meet the highest standards.
We are committed to ensuring that our state's water resources
receive the best environmental protection feasible. Without additional
state and federal support, we are concerned that many critical
clean water projects will be delayed or suspended.
The Council advocates increased state clean water funding and
monitors implementation of the State Revolving Fund (SRF). At the
federal level, the Council focuses on supporting efforts by the
Massachusetts Congressional delegation to expand federal clean
water funding through reauthorization of the Clean Water Act and
Safe Drinking Water Act.
Higher Education/Science: Mass Insight has a
long history of producing reports that focus attention on the importance
of public and private higher education and science research in
Massachusetts. Mass Insight, in partnership with Associated Industries
of Massachusetts, the Massachusetts High Technology Council, and
several other industry sector organizations, coordinates the Science
and Technology Initiative, whose mission is to create a state policy
to facilitate and support major science and technology education
and research initiatives that improve Massachusetts' competitive
position and enhance its economic strength.
K-12 Education: Mass Insight has a long and successful
history of addressing issues related to elementary and high school
education. In 1997, Mass Insight formed Mass Insight Education
and Research Institute (MERI), an independent not-for-profit corporation
focused on improving student achievement in Massachusetts' public
schools. Through public outreach initiatives, school leadership
training programs, and public opinion and policy reports, Mass
Insight Education supports the implementation of the 1993 Education
Reform Act, with a primary focus on its central initiative, the
statewide standards and testing program.
MERI’s primary goal is to raise academic achievement for
all students, including those who have been trapped in a cycle
of low expectations. To meet this goal, Mass Insight Education
and its Coalition for Higher Standards work in three areas:
Public outreach
Strengthening schools
