The PHFI is working toward building public health capacity in India by establishing 9 new institutes of public health over the next 6 years (4 already under construction); assisting the growth of existing public health training institutions/departments and facilitating their evolution into major institutes of public health; advising the Indian government on public health matters and developing a public healthcare workforce for India; establishing a strong national research network of public health and allied institutions undertaking policy- and program-relevant research to advance public health goals in prioritized areas—utilizing international partnerships where appropriate; engaging public health expertise to generate public health policy recommendations and developing a vigorous advocacy platform to communicate these recommendations to policy makers and other relevant stake holder groups; and facilitating the establishment of an independent accreditation body for degrees in public health that are awarded by training institutions across India.
