Employer Groups and Council urge Congress to support tax deferrals that enable working families to save for their retirements

The Boston Financial Services Leadership Council, together with The New England Council and Associated Industries of Massachusetts, today urged Congress to sustain and extend tax policies that enable workers to save for retirement and encourage companies to offer on-the-job retirement savings plans. The joint statement stressed the vital role that retirement savings tax deferrals play – helping tens of millions of working Americans to prepare for successful retirements.

Auto-Enrollment Plans Making Impact

The Employee Benefit Research Institute predicts that a large number of Baby Boomers will find themselves under financial duress in the early years of their retirement. According to the Institute’s recently released study, nearly half of “early” Boomers will struggle to afford basic necessities such as food and health insurance. Despite the troubling forecast, the number of “retirement ready” Americans has increased since 2003 due to an expansion of auto-enrollment plans. The EBRI identified the length of time an employee has been enrolled in a 401(k) plan as the best predictor of retirement income security.
