Creating the Framework for State S&T Investment
For the past few years, Mass Insight and key partner organizations like the Massachusetts High Technology Council and Associated Industries of Massachusetts have called for a strategy for state investment in Science & Technology. Mass Insight this week issued a white paper that outlined the elements of a successful state investment strategy. This is critical in light of the upcoming policy debate over Governor Deval Patrick's $1 billion life sciences strategy, the bill for which is expected to be filed this month.

Mission of the Science and Technology Initiative
The Science & Technology Initiative's mission is to create a state
policy to facilitate and support major science and technology education
and research initiatives that improve Massachusetts' competitive position
and enhance its economic strength.
Goals of the Initiative
- Increase collaborations among public universities, private universities, and Massachusetts businesses
- Accelerate the development of the UMass system as a leading-edge technology university
- Support initiatives that coordinate science and technology initiatives by private campuses with the public higher education system
- Continue steps toward improved K-12 math and science education
- Play an active role in seeking federal research funding
Research Reports
- Economy At Risk Report: Published and distributed
across the state early in 2003 to launch the Science and Technology
Initiative. This reports demonstrates how Massachusetts is being
challenged for research dollars by new regional centers and aggressive
strategies from traditional competitors like California and New
York. [PDF]
- Massachusetts Research Directory: In 2004,
Mass Insight published a directory of research centers in Massachusetts
spanning five major science and engineering sectors. The directory
highlights the Commonwealth's major university and non-profit
research centers and is being used as an economic development
tool. For more information, email SciTech@massinsight.com
