The Mass Insight Consumer Confidence Index is published quarterly
and released in conjunction with Associated Industries of Massachusetts’
Business Confidence Index and the Leading Economic Index for Massachusetts
compiled by UMass Boston Associate Professor Alan Clayton-Matthews.
Both the Consumer Confidence and Business Confidence surveys have
been conducted for nearly 20 years, yielding a high degree of credibility
in judging consumers’ and employers’ optimism for business and economic
conditions.
The Index is based on 500 telephone interviews each quarter and is conducted
by Opinion Dynamics Corporation of Cambridge, a national leader
in market research and consulting. Since its founding in 1987, ODC
has worked with over 1000 clients.
The Index is modeled on the national Conference Board Index. The Conference Board index is scaled to a 1985 base of 100 and varies above and below 100; the Mass Insight Index is adjusted to the Conference Board scale using a constant factor.
