2015
Goodwin Procter Offices, Boston, July 20
– “Massachusetts has grown complacent; MIT and Harvard
alone are no longer enough to ensure our global competitiveness,”
said Attorney General Tom Reilly before about 25 business and civic
leaders at a Global Massachusetts 2015 Roundtable hosted by Wayne
Budd of Goodwin Procter on July 20th. “We must leverage our
intellectual capital and build on our college and university resources.”
Reilly described his economic development plan, which calls for
a $500 million, five-year investment to upgrade R&D capacity
at UMass. The attorney general said the proposal would translate
the Commonwealth’s educational strength into jobs by generating
start-up companies.
More broadly, Reilly called for better alignment of public higher
education with the state economy, citing the need to address nursing
shortages as an example. He also discussed other elements of his
economic development agenda, including streamlining the structure
of state economic development efforts and investing in infrastructure.
NOTE: Mass Insight is sponsoring a series of Global Massachusetts
2015 Roundtables to facilitate discussion between gubernatorial
candidates and business and education leaders.
